Vaginal yeast infection: What should be avoided? Know this and be careful!
A woman’s vagina is a unique microbial ecosystem composed of both beneficial and harmful microorganisms living together in a balanced state. Under normal conditions, “Lactobacillus spp.” functions to protect the vagina by maintaining a slightly acidic pH level and inhibiting the growth of pathogens. However, whenever this balance is disrupted, Candida albicans fungi, which normally reside in the body, may multiply excessively, leading to an infection that causes itching, burning, or abnormal vaginal discharge
Vaginal yeast infection is a common condition in women of all ages, especially during times of weakened immunity or when behaviors disrupt the balance of microorganisms in the vagina. Although not a serious illness, if neglected, it can progress and affect the quality of life both physically and mentally. Many people are unaware that small daily habits can trigger the onset or recurrence of yeast infections, especially when not properly cared for or when triggers are not avoided correctly
Factors that trigger vaginal yeast infections
Several factors can accelerate recurrent vaginal yeast infections, such as prolonged use of antibiotics, using soaps or cleansers with alkaline properties, wearing tight or poorly ventilated clothing, as well as stress, diabetes, and low immunity. In addition, unsafe sexual practices and douching with overly harsh solutions are also risk factors.
What to avoid when you have a vaginal yeast infection:
While many people turn to topical or oral antifungal medications, behavioral changes are also crucial for effectively preventing recurrence. Things to avoid include:
- Washing the vagina with high-pH soaps or harsh chemicals.
- Wearing tight-fitting and non-absorbent underwear.
- Wearing thick sanitary pads for too long without changing them.
- Using talcum powder in the genital area.
- Having unprotected sex while infected.
- Consuming excessive amounts of sugar and carbohydrates.
“Currently, there is increasing research supporting the role of “probiotics” in maintaining the balance of microorganisms in the vagina, especially the Lactobacillus rhamnosus and Lactobacillus reuteri strains. These can help inhibit fungal growth, reduce the rate of recurrence, and strengthen the immune system in the mucous membrane. Choosing probiotic products in oral or topical forms is therefore a supplementary option to consider alongside self-care.
Vaginal yeast infection is not a minor issue, especially if it recurs frequently. Avoiding triggers such as using incorrect products, lifestyle habits, and improper hygiene all play a role in effectively preventing and reducing the risk. This includes continuous probiotic supplementation, a new approach supported by various fields of research, which helps restore balance in the vagina naturally and safely.
